Discover Andorra

The Principality of Andorra is a small country located between Spain and France, in the eastern part of the Pyrenees. The country has no got access to sea; it is mostly located on the mountainous terrain at the height of 900 meters above the sea level. Known internationally for its ski resorts, shops with very low taxes and its modern hotel and service infrastructures, each year the country receives nearly 8 million visitors.

Andorra is also a paradise for nature lovers as 90% of the country is forest. Its capital, Andorra la Vella, is the highest capital city in Europe, at an elevation of 1,023 metres above sea level. The official language is Catalan. There are two large skiable domains: GRANDVALIRA and VALLNORD, with a total of 110 ski lifts carrying over 156,000 skiers per hour. You can get the same quality of ski slopes as the ones in Switzerland and Austria but at a fraction of the cost.

Safety

Skiing and snowboarding are extremely fun but also dangerous since you will be moving at high speeds. Here are our recommendations:

  • Always ski with a friend: No matter how good a skier you are, it’s possible to have a bad fall and be unable to continue skiing. Having a friend to look out for you.
  • Know your limits: Be honest with yourself when it comes to your skiing ability. If you’re a beginner, stick to the beginner slopes until you feel comfortable enough to move up to something steeper. Most ski trails are clearly marked as green circles (beginner terrain), blue squares (intermediate terrain), or black diamonds (advanced terrain). If a trail says it’s for experts only, it means just that. Skiing terrain that is beyond your ability is not only no fun, it’s also a good way to get hurt.
  • Follow the rules: Never venture past the ski area boundary or ski into a closed area. These areas are off-limits for a reason. They’re not patrolled by the ski patrol, and they usually contain hazards that you don’t want to deal with. Also, pay attention to any warning signs you might see. If a sign says, “Slow skiing area,” you’ll want to go slow to avoid other skiers. If a sign says, “Cliff,” you’ll want to go another way or stop before you go over the edge.
  • Practice skier etiquette: Remember that skiers in front of you or below you on the trail have the right of way. You can see them, but they probably can’t see you, so it’s up to you to avoid them. Never stop in the middle of a trail or anywhere where you can’t be seen from above, such as below a dropoff. Look uphill to make sure no one is coming toward you before you start down a trail or merge onto a new trail. If you’re passing another skier on a catwalk or narrow trail, call out “On your right” or “On your left” to let them know you’re coming up behind them.

FAQ

Of course. You can find qualified instructors on the slopes or you can find a friend to teach you. You will have a great time whether you are a beginner or a pro. You can have an instructor for 2 hours for 10€.

If you want to participate but not ski, then you can buy the trip without the ski option.

It’s crucial to have

  • a ski jacket that is breathable and water resistant
  • a pair of good ski pants
  • Ski/snow gloves
  • Body and leg warmers
  • Ski socks or a pair of wool socks (wool is water repellent unlike cotton)

We recommend that you bring or rent

  • a helmet
  • goggles
  • a small backpack to carry energy gels, water and snacks

Other things to considerate:

  • bring some snacks or protein bars to eat on the slope. It’s easy to forget to eat while you are on the slopes
  • A good action camera like a GoPro to record your SICK RIDES
  •

We highly recommend buying what you need from Decathlon. They have great ski equipment at very reasonable and affordable prices and the quality overall is good.

If you can’t find what you are looking for, check out El Corte Ingles. Their winter equipment are more expensive than Decathlon but they have great  beginner and pro materials.

The meeting point will be at 07:00pm at Plaza Espanya between the two towers.

Sure. You can buy the trip without the ski option.

Yes, definitely. We will visit a ski shop and you will be able to get what you need. They will have a wide range of options (beginner, intermediate, pro, tall, short, different shoe and helmet sizes, …). The prices will be 20€ for the ski equipment and 30€ for the snowboarding equipment.

If you need the ski equipment, then make sure you pick the option with the ski equipment during your purchasing.

Check out YouTube. These are the YouTube channels we recommend:

Learn the basics of skiing such as how to do French Fries and Pizza (ski-slang terms for keeping your skis parallel to move forward (French Fries) and stopping in a V form (Pizza))!!!!!!!
